The quality 2yo racing continues at Caulfield this weekend with the running of the G3 Chairman’s Stakes. Gai Waterhouse’s Nayeli, an impressive winner at her only start in Sydney, is tipped to keep her unbeaten record intact here and is the $3.00 favourite. Her danger according to the market comes from the Hawkes camp in the shape of Bugatty ($4.80). He looked good winning last time out up the Flemington straight and the form from that race has stood up well. The only other runner under double figures is one of three debutants, Eqdaam at $5.00.

1. BUGATTY – G Boss (2) 57kgs
The Dreamscape colt ran second to Chivalry on debut at Moonee Valley three days after Christmas before a fortnight later, leading all the way when racing up the Flemington straight to defeat Ducal Castle and Lotion in a strong manner. Ducal Castle subsequently ran well in last weekend’s Blue Diamond Preview, finishing third to Mohave. Bugatty has drawn perfectly here in two and will take up a forward position which proved to be of a significant advantage at this track last week.
2. JARKLIN – C Symons (5) 56kgs
The Rod Symons trained runner registered his first win at his second start, when scoring a ¾ length win in a Cranbourne Maiden (1000m) early in the New Year. The son of King Of Prussia has since run second to the highly promising Nostradamus in the Nursery Plate at Flemington (1100m). Chased valiantly last start and improving with each run. He should get a nice trail and his opportunity in this race from gate five.
3. ILLUSTRIOUS LAD – C Newitt (10) 56kgs
Moe trainer Peter Gelogotis took his son of I Am Invincible to Adelaide for his debut the week prior to Christmas. Starting the 7/4 favourite, he gave supports reason for concern early, bucking at the start and settling toward the tail of the seven horse field before moving up to be just behind the leaders on the turn. He proved too strong late and defeated Manhattan Prince and Lotion – the latter running third to Bugatty since. Trialled well at Sale just over two weeks ago but the wide draw will make it tough.
4. ZULULAND – S Baster (1) 56kgs
Baster partnered this Fastnet Rock colt in his only start thus far, finishing second to Nordic Empire, who has since run third to Invisible at Canterbury, in a 1000m race here at Caulfield late November. Came from well back in the run on debut and if following a similar pattern here, may need his share of luck from the inside draw over this trip and this track.
5. CORAM – C Williams (8) 56kgs
From a wide gate, he settled well back in the back field when making his debut in the Inglis 2yo (1000m) at Moonee Valley in late October. The John Sadler trained son of Sebring caught the eye late, making up many lengths to run fifth (1 ¾ lengths) behind Silversands. Third in that race was Cornrow whose only start since, was a second placing behind Mohave in last week’s Blue Diamond Preview. He will get back again from gate eight but showed more than enough on debut to be given serious consideration here.
6. HAWKING – J Kah (6) 56kgs
His only start came in the Listed Debutante Stakes (1000m) back in October of last year. From a good draw, he settled in fifth position in the field of eleven and after racing in limited room in the straight, finished seventh (5.6 lengths) behind Moonlight Hussler. From local stables of Mick Price, would prefer to see what the son of Street Cry produces here going on his debut run.
7. EQDAAM – D Oliver (11) 56kgs
Purchased by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum for $220,000.00 at last year’s Inglis Easter Sale, the son Choisir will be making his debut. Out of the Rory’s Jester mare Regal Fun, he is a half brother to three winners, the best of them being Regal Thunder (x Hussonet) who ran third in the Listed Mona Lisa at Wyong. Not seen at the trails but best to treat with caution.
8. TASHBEEH – C Schofield (9) 56kgs
A very well bred Commands colt that will be making his debut for trainer David Hayes. He is the first foal out of More Than Ready mare More Valour, a daughter of Valourina who has produced G2 winners Timbourina and Media along with Listed winner Cardinal Virtue. He had one soft trail back in late October, finishing last of three runners behind Jarklin – who has been good in three starts – by 2 ¼ length. Another debutante from an astute yard who would not surprise if he produced a forward showing.
9. NAYELI – V Duric (4) 54kgs
The first of three fillies in the race, this daughter of More Then Ready is prepared by Randwick trainer Gai Waterhouse. She produced a very professional effort on debut, jumping well and settling on the leader’s back before racing away to score a comfortably two length victory in a Maiden Plate at Kensington just over three weeks ago. Second in that race was Peggy Jean, subsequent winner of the Inglis Classic where she defeated the well performed Boomwaa. Drawn nicely here in four and will be in a prominent position throughout. Can win.
10. CAUTIOUS – R Maloney (3) 54kgs
By Lonhro, she is out of the well performed and multiple stakes placed mare Seeking Attention. From the local stables of Robert Smerdon, she commenced her career on the 15th January as the 7/4 favourite in a 2yo fillies’ race over 1000m at Caulfield. From a wide gate, she camped on a hot speed and stuck on well to run third behind Top Sight and Sakitto (2.1 lengths). Sakitto has since run third in last week’s Blue Diamond Preview behind Eloping. She can only be better for that run and drawn much more favourably here.
11. TAHNI DANCER – (7) 54kgs
The Sebring filly will be making her debut for local trainer Clint McDonald. She is out of the well performed race mare Tahni Girl, winner of the G3 McNeil Stakes over this track and trip back in 2004. She cost her connections $300,000.00 at the Inglis Easter Sale but we’re yet to see her on the track in any official capacity. Certainly bred to be good, draw is a little awkward though and she meets some potentially smart ones here first up.
RACE OVERVIEW
Bugatty should be able to take advantage of his inside gate and lead. Liked they way he ran through the line last start and he’ll prove hard to run down. Tracking him form their respective good draws will be the fillies Cautious and Nayeli. Both showed enough at their only starts to be worthy of serious consideration here and the weight advantage of 3kg could prove vital over the final 100m. Of those running on, something that wasn’t easy to do last week at this track, would opt for Coram – excellent debut and form from that race franked and Zuzuland, who may just need some luck jumping from the inside gate.
