Caulfield, Melbourne Cup 2014 contender joins Smerdon camp

More Than Sacred could have a crack a the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups on her way to a date with a champion early next year.

The 2013 Group One New Zealand Oaks winner, More Than Sacred has joined the Robert Smerdon stable for one preparation.

Prolific Japanese breeder Katsumi Yoshida bought the mare privately to add to the outstanding line-up of Australasian mares to visit the champion racehorse and sire Deep Impact.

Yoshida bought a share in the former top three-year-old Mosheen, who Smerdon trained to win four Group One races, including the 2011 VRC Oaks.

Smerdon will start More Than Sacred’s racing program in the coming weeks, with the Melbourne spring fitting perfectly into Yoshida’s breeding plans with the northern hemisphere breeding season to begin early in 2015.

“With the timing, the opportunity is there to have a spring preparation so we’ll see how she comes up,” Smerdon said.

“If she comes up well enough, she’ll be heading towards the Cups.”

Smerdon entered More Than Sacred in a barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday but decided against sending the five-year-old around on heavy ground.

More Than Sacred has form at 3200 metres with a third in the Group One Auckland Cup in March.
