A disappointing trial at Cranbourne this morning by Caulfield Cup winner Jameka has cast doubt over a comeback to the races.

The 2016 Caulfield Cup winner Jameka was sold for $2.6 at the Magic Millions sale earlier this year was set for a comeback to the race track after her work at Ciaron Maher’s training stables was encouraging although a lacklustre trial at Cranbourne has cast doubt over that plan.

Jameka hasn’t raced since suffering travel sickness after winning the 2017 Group One BMW in Sydney, stepped out in an official barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday and finished sixth in a star-studded heat over 990m.

After her trial, Maher told Racing.com: “I know the horse really well and she’s a little bit off where she needs to be.

“If she goes back to the races, she goes back to group 1 level and she needs to be competitive at that level otherwise there is no point running her, so she needs to improve a little.

A decision will likely be made in the coming weeks if connections will push on with a comeback plan or whether she is retired to the breeding barn.
