The Caulfield Cup is one of the most prestigious thoroughbred races in Australia, held each year at Caulfield Racecourse over a distance of 2400 metres. This Open Handicap event is raced by horses three years and up, with many of the nations best horses having won this event since the first race in 1879. The most famous Caulfield Cup champions are notable for different reasons, with some horses winning more than once and others taking out prestigious doubles.
A total of eleven horses have managed to win the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double, surely one of the hardest tasks in Australian racing. Poseidon achieved this feat in 1906, followed by The Trump in 1937, Rivette in 1939, Rising Fast in 1954, Even Stevens in 1962, Galilee in 1966, Gurner’s Lane in 1982, Let’s Elope in 1991, Doriemus in 1995, Might and Power in 1997, and Ethereal in 2001.
A number of horses have also managed to win the Caulfield Cup more than once, with Poseidon being the first to take out back to back victories in 1906 and 1907. Uncle Sam also won the Cup twice in 1912 and 1914, as did Whittier in 1922 and 1925 and Rising Fast in 1945 and 1955. In recent years winners of the Caulfield Cup include Dunaden in 2012, Southern Speed in 2011, Descarado in 2010, Viewed in 2009, and All The Good in 2008.
