Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup markets shaken up

Hawkspur has proven itself to be a serious contender this spring following a stunning win at Randwick in the Chelmsford Stakes.

The Chris Waller-trained horse is now the $10 second favourite to win the Caulfield Cup, and has also shortened into $15 for the Melbourne Cup.

“Hawkspur was extremely impressive at Randwick today, and as a result he has been a major mover in several spring feature markets,” Betstar’s Alan Eskander said.

“The Queensland Derby winner has shortened from $21 into $10 in the Caulfield Cup and is now second favourite behind Super Cool at $9. He has also leapt into Melbourne Cup contention, moving from $61 into $15.

“There was a small question mark as to whether his three-year-old form in Brisbane would hold up against Melbourne and Sydney’s best but given his dominant win on Saturday there is no doubt he will measure up in Australia’s best handicaps later this spring.”

Puissance De Lune has maintained favouritism for the Melbourne Cup after being edged out at the post by Foreteller in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington.

“Puissance De Lune’s price hasn’t moved with the grey still the $5.50 favourite for the Melbourne Cup,” Eskander said.

“He hasn’t lost any admirers from a Cups perspective and we expect the punters to continue to back him. On the other hand punters who backed Sea Moon in the Cups will hold their breath over the coming days, hoping he didn’t sustain any injuries after knuckling badly at the start and ruining any chance he had in the Makybe Diva. He has been a slight drifter from $11 out to $13 in the Cup due to this.”

Bound For Earth was one of the big movers in the Thousand Guineas shortening from $41 into $8 after winning the Furious Stakes at Randick on Saturday, while Miracle To Me has moved into $21 from $151 following a strong win at Flemington.

Meantime, Thousand Guineas favourite Guelph has drifted out to $4.40.

“It was a dramatic finish for Bound For Earth with Nick Hall putting his whip away with 25 metres to go, but all the same it was an impressive win,” Eskander said.

“Guelph has maintained outright favouritism for the Thousand Guineas despite finishing second in the Furious Stakes, but has drifted slightly from $4.20 out to $4.40.

“Guelph is entitled to be favourite. She was the dominant 2YO over 1400m and 1600m, and judging by her first up run today, she has made a solid return.”

In other market moves, Long John has shortened from $17 into $8 for the Caulfield Guineas after winning the Henry Bucks Best Dressed Stakes at Flemington.
