Caulfield Cup 2016: McEvoy booked to ride Godolphin International

Kerrin McEvoy has been booked to ride Godolphin’s Scottish in the Caulfield Cup 2016.

The Charlie Appleby-trained Scottish won the Group Three Strensall Stakes at York on August 20, his last race before travelling to Australia.

The five-year-old gelding has 54.5kg for the $3 million handicap over 2400m at Caulfield on October 15.

“Kerrin knows Melbourne so well and he also has plenty of know-how when it comes to riding European horses,” Appleby told Godolphin’s website.

“He is ideal for the job.”

Godolphin’s No. 1 Australian rider James McDonald will miss the Caulfield Cup after being suspended for careless riding on Monday and deciding not to appeal.

Turnbull Stakes winner Hartnell has firmed for the Cox Plate in which McDonald will be free to ride in a mouth-watering clash with champion mare Winx.

With McDonald on the sidelines, McEvoy will be aiming for a second Caulfield Cup win for Godolphin.

He won the race in 2008 aboard the Saeed bin Suroor-trained All The Good in the midst of an 11-year stint riding for Sheikh Mohammed’s operation which ended in 2014.

Scottish touched down in Melbourne on Saturday and is one of six Godolphin horses in quarantine at Werribee and one of 30 left in the Caulfield Cup after the latest acceptance stage.
