Caulfield Cup 2013 wont produce Melbourne Cup winner

Leading Australian bookmaker Alan Eskander from Betstar doesn’t believe the 2013 Melbourne Cup winner will come from Saturday’s Caulfield Cup which was won by the Lloyd Williams-owned Fawkner.

Fawkner’s impressive win in the 2400 meter Group one race has seen his price slashed from $81 into $34 with Betstar for the Melbourne Cup, while runner-up Dandino has firmed from $21 into $11.

“An interesting Caulfield Cup, as arguably it doesn’t have nearly the bearing on the Melbourne Cup as it normally would,” Betstar’s Alan Eskander said.

“The first four horses across the line potentially will struggle to run the distance of the 3200 meters of the Melbourne Cup.

“I don’t think the Melbourne Cup winner will come from the Caulfield Cup. I believe the winner will either be flying in tonight or will come from next week’s Cox Plate.

“Fawkner was impressive winning, but the run of the race was probably Dandino, who struck a little interference trying to get clear at the top of the straight. As a result the international has been wound in from $21 into $11 with Betstar for the Cup, while Fawkner’s price has been slashed from $81 into $34.”

Caulfield Cup pre-race favourite Hawkspur couldn’t get the job done on Saturday. Despite this he still remains second favourite for the Melbourne Cup at $9.

“Hawkspur was good without being outstanding, and in turn his price has remained rock solid in the Melbourne Cup at $9 leaving him second in betting behind favourite Fiorente,” Eskander said.

Dear Demi ran third in the Caulfield Cup and has been wound in from $61 into $41 for the Melbourne Cup, while Jet Away has firmed from $51 into $21 after finishing fourth.

“Dear Demi ran an honest race, while Jet Away was superb taking off early and sitting three wide on speed for the last 800 metres of the race,” Eskander said.
