The training partnership of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman combined with apprentice jockey Luke Cartwright to deliver a flawless treble at Sandown Hillside, securing three consecutive victories between races five and seven.
The winning streak began with $15 outsider Suances, who stormed down the outside to narrowly beat favourite Changing Colours. Cartwright followed up that win with a well-timed ride on Saban in the next race.
Saban recorded his third victory from 14 starts in the Sportsbet Race Replays Handicap (1800m) at Benchmark 100 level, outlasting a strong challenge from imports Sayedaty Sadaty and Tempesti. Katherine Coleman praised Cartwright for his understanding of the horse’s quirks.
“He can be a little bit difficult, this horse,” Coleman said.
“I think the fact that Luke’s had a couple of rides on him now, he’s sort of got a feel for him and he knows that he can have a tendency to want to lay in at times as well.
“But he can hit a little bit of a flat spot and you’ve got to nurse him through it. It was a lovely, confident ride from Luke today.”
Cartwright then demonstrated his tactical versatility with a front-running masterclass aboard Roadcone, guiding the $4.40 betting sites chance to a dominant 2¼-length win in the Stow Storage Solutions Handicap (1600m) at Benchmark 84 level.
“I am a bit speechless. I had a nice even book, and if they turned up, I thought they could run a really nice race,” Cartwright said.
“And for all horses to turn up and myself give them a good ride, it means a lot.”
Using his 3kg claim to reduce his weight to 50/51kg across all three winners, Cartwright said he felt confident once Roadcone balanced in the straight.
“I knew if I held him down the dip and let him skip with 51 (kilograms), I think he was going to take some catching.
“I thought he’d quicken up very well, but he quickened up even better than well. So, no, I’m rapt.”
This treble marked not only Cartwright’s first metropolitan treble but also the first metro treble for Katherine Coleman since officially joining Moody as co-trainer in 2023.
