Canterbury Stakes Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

The Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on Saturday has attracted a small field of seven but has a good mix of talent to do battle.

The in-form three year old Standout is set to take on the older horses again after giving them a towelling in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes over 1200m at Randwick on February 1.

The Godolphin blue army is well represented with last start winners Alizee and Savatiano and the Group 1 winning Kiwi The Bostonian will no doubt be revved up for a bold first up performance.

We have analysed the entire field and our complete 2020 Canterbury Stakes tips can be found below!

Mister Sea Wolf

Mister Sea Wolf had mixed form during the 2019 Spring Carnival but did manage to find the winner’s stall on two occasions in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill and in the $1m The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange.  The Chris Waller trained import has won first up in the past but might find this field a bit slick.

The Bostonian

The Group 1 winning Kiwi The Bostonian has a terrific first up winning record of five from six and has won three times from three attempts over 1300m but is having his first look at the Randwick track. The Bostonian was a dual Group 1 winner during the 2019 Brisbane Winter Carnival but could only manage one placing from four runs during the 2019 Melbourne Spring Carnival. The Kiwis are having a great run in Sydney at the moment and they are not to be taken lightly this weekend.

Begood Toya Mother

Begood Toya Mother was rewarded for his consistent form with a win in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield during the 2019 Melbourne Spring Carnival. The Daniel Bowman trained five year old has been well beaten at two runs back from a spell and has to improve on his latest seventh in the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield if he is to be a chance in the Canterbury Stakes.

Alizee

Alizee suffered a shock first up defeat as the odds on favourite when second to Standout in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 1 but then made amends with a win in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick a fortnight later. The James Cummings trained mare is always a chance in the class of race.

Savatiano

Savatiano returned from a spell in great style with a dominant first up win against the mares in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on February 22.  The James Cummings trained mare has handy second up form and has to be included among the top chances.

White Moss

White Moss has caused upsets in the past and she always give her best but is unplaced from three Group 1 outings. The Grey mare has filled the minor placings at her two runs this preparation with a first up third in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Randwick followed by a second to Savatiano in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill.

Standout

The Gerald Ryan trained Standout has been installed as the favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Canterbuy Stakes on the back of his first up win in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 1 and the three year old has won a 1030m Rosehill barrier trial since. Standout is the winner of four of his five race starts and will be hard to beat again.
