Canterbury horse racing Tips – 18/12/2013

A strong seven race card will be run and won at Canterbury on Wednesday, and with sunny weather forecast for the day, the track should improve to a firm surface. hopefully in the good range.

Race One: Australian Turf Club Handicap 1580m Form Guide

Back Me: Putting Laidback Larry on top to kick off the program. Progressive gelding resuming here for Gai Waterhouse, who has been brought up to fitness by two very solid barrier trials, and winning them both. Western Symbol, a stablemate, had a similar prep heading into the Villiers last weekend and ran so well, so don’t be concerned he is first up over the mile.
Big Danger: Intimate Moment was desperately unlucky not to win here last time out behind Absolutelyanything, not getting much room in the straight before ducking through late to be beaten narrowly. She is an up and comer who does have the race fitness.
Roughie: Doesn’t seem to be much pace in the race, apart from the tip and Senor Montoya, who was a bit disappointing last start at Newcastle, but comes back to an ideal distance, and the in form apprentice in Sydney, Damien Thornton, takes back the ride.

Race Two: Tab iPad App Maiden Handicap 1100m Form Guide

Back Me: Celebrities Choice for us here. This Team Hawkes filly, a close relation to group 1 winner Gathering and stakes performer Florentina, trialled very, very nicely last week at Rosehill, sitting outside the speed before bolting clear to win under a hold from James McDonald, who has interestingly elected to steer out big danger. Bowman takes the ride…handy replacement.
Big Danger: McDonald is riding Hadiklaim for Chris Waller and I didn’t mind the way he hit the line when third in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm a couple of weeks back. Shouldn’t be underestimated, especially with the Waller polish.
Roughie: Supreme Joy has let punters down badly in her two runs this time in, but in her defence, she has been caught wide in each run. She draws a barrier here, and on her trial win prior to her first up run, she’ll go very close.

Race Three: 2014 ATC Membership On Sale Handicap 1900m Form Guide

Back Me: Looks a perfect race for Tamariz, who ran really well here first up over the 1550m when a fighting third to Absolutelyanything and Intimate Moment, with the latter being a serious chance in the first, so that’ll be a guide to this horses chances, but he raced on that occasion that he wants further, and he gets that here, plus the services of Nash.
Big Danger: Son Of Ross is an acceptor for the first race also, but the way he raced last time out, I’d say he’ll race here over the 1900m. He got a long way back last start and worked to the line strongly late. He seems to hit a flat spot when they sprint in front, but once balanced up, he really surges.
Roughie: Green Adventure was far from disgraced over this track/distance a couple of weeks back behind At All Costs in a much stronger race than this. Once again he only carries 54kg and again draws well to get a nice sit on the speed. A must again for exotics.

Race Four: Congrats @ Vinery Handicap (68) 1250m Form Guide

Back Me: This is a very good race for the three year olds. You can just about make a winning case for any runner here, that’s how much depth is in it! Going with Fiftyshadesofgrey, who was a good maiden winner at Gosford before running an impressive third on Ballarat Cup Day in a $100,000 race. Drops big time in class, returns to Sydney and is only half a kilo over the minimum.
Big Danger: Saralago had absolutely no luck here first up when beaten by Arrowette. Tommy Berry was probing for a run approaching the straight, but couldn’t get out at any stage and went to the line untested. With normal luck here, she’ll be hard to beat.
Roughie: Mr Entertainer is a well raced youngster for Grant Allard who didn’t have much luck first up on his home track at Gosford in a hot benchmark race. He was caught wide on the speed and faded late. Last time in, he placed behind Windjammer and Bull Point, both Group 1 performers.

Race Five: Become An ATC Sponsor Handicap (75) 1100m Form Guide

Back Me: Looks to be a lovely race for Newcastle sprinter, and the omen bet of the Summer, Merry Christmas. Put together three wins from as many runs last time in, and comes here off a solid barrier trial placing at Newcastle in smart time behind Curfew, who bolted in last Sunday at Hawkesbury.
Big Danger: Kencella maps very well here. Should get the perfect drag across from the leader Master Gaze, sit outside him, beat him off on the turn and cling on for his supporters. Last bit will test, so that’s probably why Nash is taking the ride.
Roughie: At the start of the year, Shivarchi was running some excellent races behind some quality gallopers, including Happy Galaxy and Centrepet. For some reason, he did not come up at all during the Winter. He then resumed on Melbourne Cup Day at Kembla and was a dominant winner, then backed it up with a slashing fourth at Randwick behind Inside Job, whom he meets better at the weights.

Race Six: Tab.com.au Handicap (70) 1250m Form Guide

Back Me: Looks to be plenty of pace in the race, which should suit the Team Cummings runner Ashamar, who has been excellent in two runs this time in. Was grabbed on the peg by Turbulent Jet first up, then bumped into a smart one in Smart Moochi over this track/distance. Should get a dream run off a hot speed and attack the line.
Big Danger: Barachello didn’t have much last time out at Gosford where he was caught wide for most of the trip and was found wanting late. With some cover and a more cold ride, he can show sharp improvement and win this.
Roughie: July Opera probably should have won last start at Hawkesbury, but was never really clear of a pocket until the race was well and truly won. He is another who should appreciate a genuine speed and charge home late.

Race Seven: Canterbury Park Handicap (70) 1250m Form Guide

Back Me: Going for some value in Xatel Ekwa, who was running some fair races a couple of months back, but wasn’t threatening, so trainer Craig Carmody sent him back to the trials after a freshen up, trialled well, then worked to the line strongly here a couple of weeks back behind Holy Delusions, who came out and won last Saturday. He will sit back and savage the line late provided there is some speed, which there should be.
Big Danger: Roll The Bones resumed for a new stable over this track/distance a couple of weeks back and worked home well when third to Arrowette. Fitter, drawn well and Schofield retains the ride. Massive threat.
Roughie: Would have put Pillow Talk on top, but the bad barrier means he can only go in as third pick. He was excellent when resuming here behind the well performed Turf Hero, winding up from the back. If they go crazy in front, he’ll hit the line hard, but doubt he can win. He is more of an exotic horse.
