Calaway Gal Stakes 2013 – Tips

A near capacity field of fillies will take part in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes to be run at Doomben this Saturday. The impeccably bred Oakleigh Girl, who won a G3 race on debut in good style, is rightly the early odds on favourite. Her main competition according to the market is Totally Sure and Ruby Soho. Both have been good in the respective runs thus far and drawn to be able to trail the favourite throughout.

Calaway Gal Stakes Form Guide

1. OAKLEIGH GIRL – M Cahill (3)

Being by Snitzel out of Miss Kournikova – both winners of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate during their racing careers, this filly named herself. She showed plenty of promise when making her debut up the Flemington straight on Cup Day, winning the G3 7News Stakes by 1 ¼ lengths leading all the way. Drawn well here and will prove very hard to beat.

2. TOTALLY SURE – R McMahon (4)

Made her debut as the 11/8 favourite in an Open class 2yo race (1010m) back in October and was out-bobbed on the line by Grapevine. The Not A Single Doubt filly made amends at her next and most recent start when comfortably winner at Doomben (1110m). Hasn’t done anything wrong in two starts and from gate four, will be placed to advantage throughout.

3. RUBY SOHO – R Thompson (5)

Liam Birchley produced this daughter of Publishing for her debut in the first week of October and she finished a respectable third (1.6 lengths) behind Grapevine and Totally Sure. A few weeks then until her next and most recent start and from the front, she led all bar virtually the last hop when claimed by Divine Service. That was her first run in almost two months and the winner from that race looks handy. Drawn well and well get her chance.

4. VO TREASURE – B Stewart (8)

She comes to town after having won both of her starts on her home-track of Townsville in good style. The daughter of Falvelon has drawn well in each start and been afforded every opportunity in the run before scoring by margins of a long neck and 1 ¼. Can’t knock winning form but she faces a stiff rise in grade compared to that that she has faced at home.

5. ALL THE ANGELS – A Spinks (1)

Ran fourth in Open company on debut behind Grapevine and, like many did from that race, she come out and won her next start – a Gold Coast Maiden (900m) by a comfortable 1 ½ lengths when leading from the front. She led out again at her next and most recent start – an 850m race on the Sunshine Coast – but failed to produce the same effort and finished third (2.6 lengths). Inside gate an advantage by will find this race much tougher than last start and likely to struggle late.

6. FREEZETHEMILLIONS – J Byrne (11)

Made a winning debut when claiming an 850m race on the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago by 1 ¾ lengths. The Matthew Dunn trained filly was impressive late and whilst she steps up significantly in class, it was a very promising start. She settled just off a good tempo on debut but from a poor draw here, will be spotting them a start as they turn for home.

7. ELITIST – C Munce (10)

Despite drawing the widest gate in the field of ten when making her debut three weeks ago, the Stratum filly trained by Kelso Wood, started odds-on courtesy of her impressive barrier trial win eleven days beforehand. She crossed to sit second and battled on well to run third (0.9 lengths) behind Divine Service and Ruby Soho who led throughout. Another awkward draw here is of no advantage and as blown from her opening price of $4.25 to $6.00.

8. GIVE ME TIME – G Goold (15)

Chased home All The Angels when second on debut in a Gold Coast maiden over 900m before running fifth (4.4 lengths) at her only start since, when capitulating late after leading in a 1200m race at Doomben. Probably has to go for broke and try and lead again here from a horrible draw but like last start, should be easily accounted for.

9. LA TENZA – S Apthorpe (13)

Oakey trainer Patrick Sexton comes to town with his Tycoon Ruler filly who ran second behind Freezethemillions on the Sunshine Coast when making her debut recently, beaten 1 ¾ lengths. Faces many new challenges here though, class, distance, draw and they’ll prove too much for her to contend with.

10. STAR DROP – T Bell (2)

Well bred daughter of Starcraft out of the Listed winning mare Royal Shiraz, she made her debut for Toowoomba trainer Rex Lipp three weeks ago at Eagle Farm. Drawing the inside gate in the field of ten, she secured a nice run in transit and finished on the heels of the place-getters, headed by Divine Secret. Drawn well again here and can allow for some natural improvement with that run now under her belt. Not without a place chance.

11. ELLE LOU – L Cassidy (7)

Snitzel filly that made her debut a fortnight ago in 1110m race at Doomben. She settled handy to the lead but on a heavy track, was unable to improve her position in the run home and finished fifth (3.1 lengths) behind Celestial Dragon and Eljetem. Up against her own sex here and with the possibility of a drier track, an improved effort would not surprise.

12. HOT TEMPO – J Taylor (12)

The first of four debutants entered here, she’s a Raheeb filly who won a Deacon barrier trial last week when ridden by Jim Byrne. There’s nothing to excited about in her pedigree and having drawn poorly in twelve, would think she’s faced with a tough task.

13. RAMBLIN DAISY – SCRATCHED

14. SHADOW DOLL – V Colgan (6)

From the Meagher trainer establishment, this filly is by Dane Shadow out of an unraced Dolphin Street mare, Dol. Dol has produced a Group 1 winner, Mirjulisa Lass (Vinery Stud Stakes) but she is the exception to the rule compared to her siblings.

15. AMBITIOUS BLONDE – R Wiggins (9)

Tony Gollan produces this filly of Falvelon for the first time. She’s by Show A Heart mare Heart’s Purring who has only one other to race, Mr Jetset, also trained by Gollan who after two trial wins, finished midfield on debut two months ago. This filly not seen at any trials and trainer should have a good handle on her possibilities with his previous experience dealing with the family.

16. PURE DIAMOND – (16)

Trevor Miller is the trainer and owner of the filly by Purrealist, the first foal of Royal Academy mare Diamond Rosie. Hasn’t been seen at any public trials but drawing the widest gate in a listed race on debut is not good.

RACE OVERVIEW

Oakleigh Girl picks herself. Having drawn gate three, it should give her the option of taking the lead or should the pace be too hot, taking up a trialling position. Thought Ruby Soho was the next best. Good against Divine Service – a $17.00 chance in early Magic Millions betting markets, and drawn to be in the right sport throughout here. Star Drop, who also comes out of the Divine Secret race, showed enough on debut that, from another good draw here, she is capable of a good run at a good price.
