Toowoomba Cup placegetter Hopfgarten is likely to get another shot at Pornichet at Doomben while runner-up Volkhere will head to the Caloundra Cup.
The stablemates pleased trainer Robert Heathcote with their efforts behind glamour horse Pornichet in Saturday’s 2100m race.
Volkhere made the pace in the Toowoomba Cup and looked likely to drop out when the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pornichet cruised past him on the home turn.
But the gelding dug in and battled away to finish a length behind Pornichet with Hopfgarten another half length third.
“I think I probably will start Hopfgarten as he was only third-up and he ran on well,” Heathcote said.
“I don’t think he will be out of the place in the Doomben Cup.”
Pornichet is now the TAB’s $4.80 for Saturday’s Group One Doomben Cup (2200m) with Leebaz at $5.
While Volkhere is yet to win past 2200m, Heathcote says he races like a true stayer and the Caloundra Cup (2400m) on May 16 looks ideal.
“I have been wanting to try Volkhere as a genuine staying horse for some time now. He will give them something to think about over 2400 metres,” Heathcote said.
“He can show early dash and then grind away. But his biggest asset is his heart.”
Volkhere was probably flattered by Pornichet’s winning margin of a length but as Heathcote pointed out, so was the rest of the field.
“There won’t be any Pornichets in the Caloundra Cup. I might even look at a race like the Queensland Cup over 3200 metres for Volkhere if he races well into the carnival,” Heathcote said.
Volkhere has been a most consistent galloper this season having had 11 starts for three wins, four seconds, two thirds and a fourth.
