Bachman’s third in the Hawkesbury Guineas has determined his path to the Queensland Derby with trainer Gerald Ryan to take him north for his lead-up race.

The colt’s program suffered a hitch when Saturday’s Guineas was delayed a week because of the wash-out at Hawkesbury and transferred to Rosehill.

Although he was never going to challenge the winner Najoom over 1400 metres on Saturday, Bachman’s effort to come from last to finish third pleased his trainer.

“Jason Collett said it took him the first part of the race to get into his rhythm which tells me he is looking for further,” Ryan said.

“He will step up to the 2000 metres in the Grand Prix Stakes in two weeks and go another two weeks to the Derby.

“Until the Guineas we weren’t sure which way to go to get to the Derby and the week delay didn’t help.

“But he has shown he wants the extra distance so that’s what we’ll do.”

Ryan came away from the Rosehill meeting with two winners including Solicit who beat stablemate Peace Force in the Group Three Darley Crown (1300m).

The two mares will also head to Queensland with the trainer abandoning any thought of a Scone Cup start next Saturday for Solicit.

“She left a bit of feed overnight so that has confirmed she won’t go to Scone,” Ryan said.

“She and Peace Force will probably go to the Glenlogan Park Stakes in Brisbane and then the Tatt’s Tiara.”

Ryan’s other Rosehill winner Skyclad will have one more start this preparation with Ryan keen to target spring racing.

Solicit’s win was particularly pleasing after Ryan recommended to owner David Moodie she be retired after her last-start failure.

He was persuaded to persevere and the mare delivered.

“David was very pleased with the win,” Ryan said.

“She will be going to stud at the end of the season so it was nice to get a stakes win with her.”
