Shangri La Boy is on a rapid rise through the ranks, and co-trainer Adrian Bott is optimistic the progressive colt can complete a meteoric ascent with victory in the $2 million Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick.
Remarkably, the son of Pierro only made his debut five weeks ago but will now have his fourth career start in a Group 1 feature over 2000m. His progression has been swift — a debut third at Canterbury over 1250m was followed by a 1400m maiden win at Rosehill and an all-the-way success in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m).
“He was excellent last start in the Gloaming — up in trip and grade, but it was a dominant performance,” Bott said. “He’s come out of that in excellent shape and continues to improve. The 2000m at Randwick should really suit him.”
Out of the same mare as Golden Slipper placegetter and Magic Millions winner Storm Boy, Shangri La Boy has a strong pedigree. But Bott says the pair couldn’t be more different. “He’s a completely different type — a real stayer with great maturity for his age,” he said.
“He’s in great order and has plenty of natural stamina. It’s another test at 2000m, but he’s kept improving with every run.”
The colt is among 18 entries for the Spring Champion Stakes, which includes the Joe Pride-trained Attica and stablemate Champagne Hero. The latter was unlucky in the Gloaming after being held up for a run. “He just didn’t get the breaks,” Bott said. “With a clear passage, he can bounce back.”
