Bowman, Williams suspended on Melbourne Cup day

Jockeys Hugh Bowman and Craig Williams will appeal careless riding suspensions handed out at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day.

The pair were each suspended for 11 meetings, commencing after the Oaks meeting on Thursday, with a return date of November 18.

Bowman and Williams hope to have their appeals heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Wednesday.

Bowman was suspended aboard Warranty in the Lexus Hybrid Plate (1400m) for causing interference to Torvill, ridden by Jason Collett.

He told stewards the head on vision made the interference look a lot worse than that shown from the helicopter overhead.

“My point of view is there was no room for him and that is why I contact him,” Bowman said.

“When I move out he’s ridden along onto heels.

“The head on makes it look a lot worse.”

Stewards deemed the interference to be in the mid-range in assessing the penalty.

Williams was suspended aboard Ozi Choice for shifting in and causing interference to Snipfit, ridden by Luke Nolen at the 800m mark of the Lavazza Short Black.

Nikita Beriman was suspended for six meetings following her win on Ocean Embers in the MSS Security Sprint for a whip breach while Joao Moreira’s Melbourne Cup replacement Ben Allen was fined $2000 on the same offence aboard Thomas Hobson.
