Boban and Weary run in the 2015 Memsie Stakes Field

The training regime which helped Boban rejoin the Group One winners’ list in May is one Chris Waller hopes can reap the same rewards in the Memsie Stakes.

More than a year after he won his third Group One trophy in the Chipping Norton Stakes, Boban claimed the Doomben 10,000 in May before running second in the Stradbroke Handicap.

He will be one of two runners for Sydney’s premier trainer in Saturday’s Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, the first Group One race of the new season.

Boban will be joined by Weary who has yet to win at the highest level but has three Group One placings on his record in the 2014 Doncaster Mile, All Aged Stakes and this year’s Doomben Cup.

“It is a similar training program we used with Boban going to the Brisbane carnival,” Waller said.

“A short break followed by two trials and then first-up over 1400 metres.

“It worked before so hopefully it works again.”

Glyn Schofield has an affinity with Boban and has been aboard in all his four Group One wins.

Melbourne jockey Craig Newitt will ride Weary who began his campaign with a close second to Burbero in the Missile Stakes.

“He is going well and deserves a Group One,” Waller said.

“He has come close before.”

Waller ended last season as the leading Group One trainer with 14 from 13 different horses.

He has begun the new season in style, taking out Saturday’s Group Two Warwick Stakes with Royal Descent.

The winner of the 2013 Australian Oaks, Royal Descent was one of six Group One winners the stable sent out in the Warwick Stakes.

Beaten Up finished fourth, Kermadec fifth, Foreteller seventh, Moriarty 10th and Hawkspur 11th with all pleasing their trainer.

“The aim is to keep most of them in Sydney for the first part of the spring and then head to Melbourne if their form warrants it,” Waller said.
