Blue Diamond Stakes champion Devil Night remains in contention for the prestigious Golden Slipper, with co-trainer Michael Hawkes confirming the colt has returned to their Rosehill stable.
The talented two-year-old was a hot topic at Randwick on Saturday, as horses who finished behind him in Victoria’s premier juvenile race—runner-up Tentyris and seventh-placed Tempted—went on to claim victories in the Todman Stakes (1200m) and Reisling Stakes (1200m), respectively.
Their wins have shaken up the Golden Slipper betting, with both now sitting at $7 behind Todman Stakes runner-up Wodeton ($5). Devil Night, currently priced at $15, remains a strong contender for the $5 million Golden Slipper (1200m), set to take place next Saturday week.
“The Melbourne form is definitely holding up,” Hawkes said at Randwick.
“He’s here in Sydney. He’s in the stable and he is progressing well. We’ll take him one step at a time but he is a chance of lining up.
“We want to be 100 per cent happy, that’s what we’ve got to make our decision on, and everything is OK at the moment.”
Devil Night has raced exclusively in Victoria, with his only other start being a runner-up finish in the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield. However, he is no stranger to Sydney’s clockwise racing, having completed his early trials there.
The Hawkes Racing team also has another potential Slipper contender in Silver Slipper runner-up West Of Swindon, who is set to compete in the Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill next Saturday as his final tune-up.
“He’s down to trial on Monday, whether we do give him a tick-over trial or we work him Tuesday, we’ll see how we go over the weekend,” Hawkes said.
“But he’s really good and he’s Pago Pago bound.”
Meanwhile, the stable’s Randwick Guineas placegetter Swiftfalcon is being aimed at the Doncaster Mile (1600m), though a decision is yet to be made on whether he will contest the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in preparation.
