News:

As he looks forward to Menari cementing his Golden Slipper prospects at Rosehill, trainer Gerald Ryan has reflected on the loss of one of his stable favourites.

Bachman was unable to be saved after succumbing to the effects of a snake bite which happened when he was in the spelling paddock.

“He was taken to hospital and they did all the tests which showed he had been bitten by a black snake,” Ryan said.

“He was such a quiet horse and was everyone’s favourite.”

A Group Three winner at two, Bachman amassed more than $430,000 prize money with four wins and six minor placings from 25 starts.

Menari, who is entered for Saturday’s Group Three Canonbury Stakes, is raced by his breeder George Altomonte who enjoyed Golden Slipper success with Overreach in 2013.

The colt has had one start, winning over 1100 metres at Randwick last Saturday week, and is high in the stable’s two-year-old pecking order.

“He has won a race and Chauffeur has also won and finished second in the Magic Millions so they are the best two at the moment,” Ryan said.

“I think Menari is a Golden Slipper type.

“Chauffeur comes back into the stable on Friday and he will head to the Todman Stakes and we will see where we go from there.”

Menari is the 56kg topweight for the Canonbury (1100m) while stablemate State Of Play is one of 14 entries for the Widden Stakes for fillies.

Veteran sprinter Dances On Stars will represent the stable in the benchmark 90 race over 1500 metres after connections opted not to run him in the Carrington Stakes.

“Corey Brown will ride Dances On Stars and hopefully we can see the horse get back in form,” Ryan said.

Brown has spent the past few years riding in Singapore but has returned home to join the Sydney jockey ranks.

Among his other rides on his first day back is the Michael Freedman-trained Teaspoon in the Widden.
