News:

Premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan started the summer carnival with a dedicated attack on Queensland’s feature races.

He intends to finish it the same way.

Gollan has three runners in the Saturday’s Listed Nudgee Quality at Doomben – Tina Melina, Sheiswhatsheis, and Snake Charmer.

The trainer has won 21 races for the summer, including seven at stakes level, and is on 51 metropolitan winners for the season.

Most corporate bookmakers have suspended betting on the metropolitan premiership and have Gollan at $2 to become the first Brisbane trainer to pass 100 winners in a season.

“I have said many times we were disappointed with our efforts in the winter and I really set out to dominate in the summer,” Gollan said.

“In the end I would probably rate our summer performance a seven out of 10.

“We failed to win a race on Magic Millions day but we did qualify 16 horses for the meeting.

“Most of our runners started double figure odds but I am learning all the time and next year we will be back on Millions day.”

He said there had been a few things against his stable in the summer including the closure of Eagle Farm as a training track in the lead-up.

“It should be a different story later this year as the training facilities should be top class.”

Gollan won the first feature race of the summer with Traveston Girl in the Listed Recognition Stakes and he rates himself a good chance to add the Nudgee Quality to his wins list.

“It has been good to win seven stakes races and we did win another feature race which had no black type,” he said.

“To make it eight stakes wins in the Nudgee would put the icing on the cake.”

He said Tina Melina, third in the Magic Millions race for fillies and mares, had been most consistent since mending her barrier manners.

“She was a great third in the Millions race but is starting to pay at the weights,” Gollan said.

“Sheiswhatsheis hasn’t had much luck of late.

“Snake Charmer was with John Thompson in Sydney where she was stakes placed. She has had one run for us when a handy sixth behind Tina Melina at the Gold Coast.”
