In the news:
A field of 13 sprinters have paid up for the $500,000 Lightning Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.
Acceptances for the Group One sprint over 1000m include a pair of two-year-olds, the Robbie Laing-trained Boomwaa and Bugatty from the Hawkes Racing stable.
Boomwaa, who won the Maribyrnong Plate in the spring over the Lightning’s straight course, has drawn barrier five.
Bugatty has drawn gate 12 with the Peter Moody-trained Thermal Current to start from the rails.
The Hawkes stable says it will assess the merit or otherwise of Bugatty’s gate before confirming a start for the promising colt.
It’s been almost 40 years since a two-year-old won the famous weight-for-age sprint.
Newmarket Handicap winner Shamexpress is set to resume from barrier eight while top mares Samaready and Snitzerland have drawn four and 10 respectively.
