Bjorn Baker with strong hand in The Hunter 2025

Saturday’s Group 2 The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle has quickly developed a reputation as a spring race worth watching, and this year is shaping no differently. Last year’s winner Briasa went on to capture Group 1 success, underlining the race’s growing influence.

Bjorn Baker does not necessarily believe he has a superstar of that level this year, but he is confident his pair Iowna Merc and Robusto are both capable of running well.

Iowna Merc has put together a strong 2025 preparation, collecting three wins including a Group 2 triumph, along with placings in the Expressway Stakes and the Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m) behind Rothfire.

That Sydney Stakes effort encouraged Baker to lift his sights and take on Jimmysstar, Lady Shenandoah and Briasa in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) last start, though the gelding was never a factor and finished last.

“Iowna Merc never fired on the track last time but he’s in good order,” Baker said.

“He just didn’t go at all, he didn’t fire, so I think we just press on.”

Stablemate Robusto will also line up for Darby Racing, who purchased the son of Zed for $160,000 in September 2024. Since arriving in the Baker yard from Chris Waller’s stable, he has earned more than $1.5 million, largely due to his victory in the Group 2 The Ingham (1600m).

“Robusto’s definitely well, he’s going to be first up and try and aim towards The Ingham,” Baker said.

“He’s not out of it because he’s got some good form, although I think he probably takes a run or two to get to his best.”

Both Iowna Merc and Robusto hold a handicap rating of 108 and will carry 59kg under quality conditions. Early markets have them priced at $15 and $13 respectively.
