Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr now sit in a powerful position heading towards the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) after Big Sky delivered an impressive debut victory at Flemington.

The son of Bivouac proved far too strong in the TAB We’re On (1000m), cruising to victory under Jordan Childs, who took the ride after Mark Zahra was ruled out due to a fractured tibia.

Backed into $2.90 equal favouritism, Big Sky began from the outside but was allowed to roll forward by Childs, settling comfortably before accelerating clear to win by 2¾ lengths over Mirador, with Boridi another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Having been priced at $15 for the Blue Diamond prior to his debut, Big Sky was swiftly crunched into $6 following the performance, with stablemate Guest House now heading the market.

Michael Kent Jnr was delighted with the way the colt handled himself on debut.

“It worked out pretty well, really,” Kent Jnr said.

“He did a lot wrong in the first part of the race but I thought Jordy rode him perfectly.

“The plan was ride the horse first and race second, just keep it smooth.

“He got across relatively easily, the horse has got natural speed, and I suppose the impressive part was the way he travelled deep into the race and then the acceleration was instant when he went for it and he really ran right past the line.”

Early markets for the feature race are available through leading Australian betting sites as Blue Diamond interest builds.

While the stable is yet to lock in a final plan, Kent confirmed Big Sky is likely to clash with Guest House in the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) on February 7.

“We haven’t matched them up,” he said.

“He’s won very impressively but it’s only going to get harder from here.

“If you didn’t go to the 1100, you’d go to the Chairman’s Stakes, but the Prelude is a nice stepping stone to the 1200 metres of a Blue Diamond.”
