News:
Pera Pera has moved to the fourth line of betting on the $400,000 Country Championship final with a dominant win his his regional heat at Wellington.
The Mack Griffith-trained gelding is already a Randwick winner although he had to share the victory with Shutter Bug in a Highway Handicap in December.
The Goree-owned five-year-old had five starts for Randwick trainer Anthony Cummings before being injured as a three-year-old.
Under Griffith he has now won five races including Sunday’s $100,000 qualifying heat over 1400m.
Aaron Bullock has ridden him to four of those wins and was thrilled with the $2.40 favourite’s 1-1/4 length win over Iron Blue ($17) whose second place also puts him in the final.
“He is a super horse. I love riding him,” Bullock said.
“He’s had wide barriers and big weights but he always finds a way to win. He is really competitive.”
Clearly Innocent is the $3.50 favourite for the final on April 2 ahead of Lofty’s Menu ($6), All Summer Long ($8) with Pera Pera at $11 alongside Bank On Henry.
Earlier in the day, the Pat Farrell-trained two-year-old Alliterate ($7) was a comprehensive 2-1/4 length winner over Spright ($3.20 fav) in the Wellington Boot.
Steve Watts, who owns the filly in partnership with Farrell, said the trainer would decide Alliterate’s next move after she notched her third win from six starts.
“Pat has been unwell but he’s on the mend,” Watts said.
“Pat will find a direction for her.”
The Ross Stitt-trained Single Spirit added the Wellington Cup to his wins in several other country Cups when he led all the way in the 1700m event.
“I haven’t won a Wellington Cup before,” Stitt said.
“I didn’t expect him to lead but it’s all worked out.”
