News:

A race over a shorter distance and worth less money is a likely option for Eloping at Caulfield.

The three-year-old has been nominated for the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) and the VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m) on Saturday.

Before studying the entries and weights of both races, co-trainer Peter Morgan said he prefers the former, despite a difference of $30,000 in prize money.

One of Australia’s busiest in her juvenile year, Eloping had a five-run spring campaign that saw her victorious in two black-type races, however she has failed to fire in two autumn runs.

Eloping hasn’t raced since finishing seventh behind Written Dash in the Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on February 27.

“She seems in reasonably good order now and hasn’t done anything wrong at the moment, so I have to be happy with her,” Morgan said.

Stephen Baster, who has ridden the daughter of Choisir in all but three of her 16 starts for five wins, will take the mount on Saturday.

Baster ventured to Tatura to partner Eloping in an 850m trial last Friday.

Eloping comfortably defeated the capable sprinter Pago Rock.

Morgan said Eloping’s performance on Saturday would determine whether she heads to Adelaide to search for a Group One victory.

The Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 2 or the Group Two Euclase Stakes a week later are options.

A total of 292 horses have been nominated for a 10-race card on Saturday which sees the running of Australia’s longest flat race, the final of the Macktow Marathon Series over 4000m.

Trust In A Gust is set to make his return in the VOBIS Gold Sprint before a Brisbane Group One campaign.

The four-year-old hasn’t raced since completing the Rupert Clarke Stakes/Toorak Handicap double.
