Bangkok Hottie to paddock after win, targets 2026 Princess Series

Jockey in gold silks rides a brown racehorse with blue tack at Royal Randwick, saddlecloth number 2.

The prospect of earning Sydney Saturday winnings before a grand spring agenda led David Payne to enter Bangkok Hottie for one additional start, where the filly shone brightly with a decisive score at Randwick.

Payne was set to send the filly for a break post her midweek maiden win at Warwick Farm, but longtime owner-breeder client John Thompson urged him to seize the moment once more.

“I was going to put her out and John said to me, \”David, give her another run. Try to get some more stakes\”,\” Payne said.

\”She can go out now. She is a very good filly.

\”The Princess Series for the fillies (will be the goal). She’ll get a mile on her ear, so we’ll aim her for that.\”

Bangkok Hottie, piloted by Ash Morgan, drew solid backing to become the $3.90 elect, following the frontrunners before surging clear in Saturday’s HMAS Sydney Handicap (1100m), prevailing by 2-1/4 lengths over debutante Keen To Exceed ($17) with Extremely Tempted ($4) third by half a length.

Payne’s modest stable has produced another talent with stakes ambitions, much to his satisfaction.

\”Nobody wanted to ride her today. They will all be wanting to ride her now,\” he said.

\”She’s special. She is bombproof too, and she’s got a turn of foot.

\”We don’t get many horses. We’ve only got twenty, so now we can at least take them on again.\”

Thompson’s enduring loyalty to Payne includes highlights like the 2023 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes champion Navajo Peak.

The Princess Series comprises four races starting in August at the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) and peaking with the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).
