After celebrating a major win in The Invitation with his Group 1 mare Stefi Magnetica, Warwick Farm trainer Bjorn Baker is eyeing even greater rewards when he saddles up Mayfair — and potentially Perfumist — in next weekend’s $10 million Golden Eagle at Royal Randwick.

Baker’s spring campaign had been testing until that breakthrough. Overpass finished a game fourth in The Everest, while Pericles narrowly missed the placings in the King Charles III Stakes. Iowna Merc was just edged out in the Sydney Stakes, Mayfair fought on bravely for a placing in the Silver Eagle, and Perfumist again ran well without a win in the Angst Stakes. A victory was certainly overdue.

Stefi Magnetica put an end to that run of near misses when she charged home to overhaul Gerringong in Saturday’s $2 million The Invitation. With that victory, Baker is confident his stable’s momentum is turning at just the right time heading into next weekend’s Golden Eagle.

Mayfair, who previously raced under the care of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, made an instant impact for his new trainer, finishing third in the Silver Eagle on debut for the Baker yard and banking $96,000 in prize money.

“He was a very astute online purchase by Darby Racing, I think around the $200,000 mark,” Baker said. “He’s already guaranteed a spot in the field and Dylan Gibbons will ride.”

While Mayfair is locked in, stablemate Perfumist remains in a nervous wait, currently sitting equal 41st on the order of entry. But Baker remains hopeful the daughter of El Roca can sneak into the field.

“She’s ready to go and hopefully a few above us on the order drop out of the running,” Baker said. “There are a few others ahead of us that ran yesterday and maybe they won’t back up. Rachel King will ride if she gets a run.”

Both Mayfair and Perfumist are currently quoted at $26 in futures betting for the 1500m feature.
