A busy Tuesday morning awaits jockey Kerrin McEvoy who will put his injured knee to the test riding potential autumn stars in important gallops in two states.
Darley’s No.1 jockey will put Blue Diamond contenders Earthquake and Mohave through their paces in early morning gallops at Flemington in Melbourne before flying to Sydney to ride star filly Guelph at the Rosehill barrier trials at 8.45am.
McEvoy injured his knee in a race fall in New Zealand just over a week ago and is looking to return to race riding at Caulfield on Saturday when Earthquake and Mohave step out in their respective Blue Diamond Preludes.
Darley’s Melbourne foreman Paul Snowden said he was “pretty sure” McEvoy would be right to ride Earthquake and Mohave on Saturday.
“We’re banking on it, anyway,” Snowden said.
Earthquake, a dominant debut winner at Randwick in November and second favourite for the Blue Diamond, is the headline nomination among the 12 initial entries for the fillies Prelude (1100m).
Mohave will meet a strong line-up in the colts and geldings Prelude with Blue Diamond favourite Rubick headlining the 23 nominations.
Debut Flemington winner Nostradamus, the Mark Kavanagh-trained Chivalry and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Francesco are also scheduled to run in the colts and geldings Prelude with that trio occupying the fourth, fifth and sixth lines of Blue Diamond betting respectively.
Snowden said Earthquake pulled up well from her close second in a Cranbourne barrier trial on Thursday and appeared to have improved from the hit-out.
“She had a bit of a blow (after the trial),” Snowden said.
“She’s doing little a bit more work tomorrow so that’s enough in itself to say she’s going the right way.”
Snowden said Mohave had continued to please since his first-up win in the Blue Diamond Preview and would be better suited over 1100m on Saturday. The stable also has Oruju entered for the colts and gelding’s Prelude with Luke Nolen to ride.
Snowden was hoping for a good draw for Mohave.
“Rubick has got to go the Melbourne way,” Snowden said.
“There’s no doubting his ability, he proved that when he won at his first start.
“Our bloke (Mohave) has still got to improve again. If he can do that off the back of his first-up win he’s going to be more than competitive with him on Saturday.”
