The Australian Oaks makes up one of four Group 1 races this Saturday on Day 2 of The Championships at Randwick.
A capacity field of fillies have accepted for the 2400m staying feature, including Chris Waller’s bright young Surround Stakes winner Hinged, as well as Godolphin two-year-old Honeycreeper – winner of last week’s Adrian Knox Stakes.
There’s also a case to be made for the David Vandyke-trained Gypsy Goddess, who so far has won five from six starts to begin her career.
With $1 million in prize-money on the line, be sure to read our thoughts one very filly in our 2022 Australian Oaks Preview.
1. Hinged (10)
- Group 1’s: 1 (2022 Surround Stakes)
- Record: 14-6:4:1
- Track: 3:1-1-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Chris Waller
- Jockey: Brenton Avdulla
- Odds: $4.00
Untried over 2400m but warrants enormous respect given her record on rain-affected tracks. Bolted in to win the Surround Stakes three back right on the line and has since gone on to run third in the Coolmore and runner-up in the Vinery Stud Stakes. Just found one better (Fangirl) last time out and is sure to settle handy again. Rock-hard fit at this stage of her prep, while Brenton Avdulla retaining the ride is a huge plus.
2. Gypsy Goddess (11)
- Record: 6-5:0:1
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: David Vandyke
- Jockey: William Pike
- Odds: $4.20
Made up a stack of ground to get up and run third in her Group 1 debut in the Vinery Stud Stakes last time out. Made it a hat-trick third-up from a spell over the summer and has raced well on soft going in the past. Should settle towards the back half of the field again and she’ll likely be finishing over the top of some of these.
3. Biscanye Bay (5)
- Record: 9-2:1:2
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
- Jockey: Mark Zahra
- Odds: $11.00
Comes out of a leading staying stable that trained last week’s ATC Derby winner Hitotsu. Failed to fire first-up in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes but typically takes a run or two to warm up. This is tougher, but her third the start prior in the VRC Oaks at Flemington does stand out.
4. Honeycreeper (15)
- Record: 11-3:1:5
- Track: 2:1-0-1
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: James Cummings
- Jockey: Hugh Bowman
- Odds: $4.40
Won the Adrian Knox Stakes last Saturday on a Heavy 9 and is now hoping to become the first horse since Colette (2020) to do the double. Untried past 2000m but only needs to hold that form to make it a double. Let down beautifully from the rail of the field to win with plenty in hand last week and looks set to race to a similar pattern from the wide draw.
5. Le Villi (14)
- Record: 5-2:0:1
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 1:0-0-0
- Trainer: Kris Lees
- Jockey: Damien Oliver
- Odds: $21.00
Lightly raced Kiwi filly having her first run in Australia. Ran on well for sixth last time out in the New Zealand Oaks and should appreciate the extra sting out of the track. Maps to get back and run on and is worth a look in exotics.
6. El Patroness (2)
- Record: 8-1:1:4
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Danny O’Brien
- Jockey: Damian Lane
- Odds: $16.00
Strips fitter for three runs back and is a much better horse than her latest run at The Valley suggests where she overraced. Form prior was solid, albeit it against much easier opposition. No shortage on talent but she is a genuine query over the trip.
7. Hope In Your Heart (17)
- Record: 12-2:1:2
- Track: 1:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Kerry Parker
- Jockey: Nash Rawiller
- Odds: $41.00
Battled on okay for sixth in the Surround Stakes three runs back and was far from disgraced two weeks ago in the Vinery at Newcastle. A win looks unlikely, but she could sneak a place if the track firms at all.
8. Gin Martini (6)
- Record: 10-2:2:2
- Track: 1:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: John Sargent
- Jockey: Robbie Dolan
- Odds: $51.00
Won well first-up at Newcastle but was no match last-start in the Vinery. Should be fitter for three runs back but looks a query under these conditions.
9. Pink Ivory (9)
- Record: 5-2:1:0
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: John Sargent
- Jockey: James McDonald
- Odds: $6.50
Promising filly that put the writing on the wall with a big four-length win at Newcastle last month in similar conditions. Backed that up running fifth in the Vinery where she was slightly held up for a run. Should appreciate getting back out over further now and gets a leading jock in the saddle looking to improve.
10. Charity Spirit (12)
- Record: 10-1:4:0
- Track: 1:0-1-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Gary Portelli
- Jockey: Ms Alysha Collett
- Odds: $51.00
Comes off two sound runs in Group 3 company. Was a clear second to Honeycreeper in the Adrian Knox last week where she was seen doing her best work late. Should take plenty away from that run but this is obviously a much tougher assignment.
11. Hardly Sweet (4)
- Record: 6-2:1:1
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Greg Eurell
- Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
- Odds: $34.00
Kept fresh for the run at Cranbourne and was too good in the finish winning by three-quarters of a length. Untried on rain-affected going but could surprise a few with her turn of foot. Worth a look each way on the quick backup.
12. Lekvarte (13)
- Record: 10-2:2:1
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Joseph Pride
- Jockey: Jay Ford
- Odds: $101
Won first-up at Wyong on soft going by close to 3.5L. Finished off fairly in the Kembla Grange Classic two back but was well-beaten on heavy going at Doomben in her latest. Probably needs it slightly firmer to play a role.
13. Secret Glamour (3)
- Record: 7-1:2:1
- Track: 1:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
- Jockey: John Allen
- Odds: $67.00
Raced with the blinkers on last week but was never a factor in the Adrian Knox. Should be plenty fit at this stage of her prep but looks tested on another heavy track.
14. Commando Drift (7)
- Record: 4-1:0:0
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Pat Carey
- Jockey: Fred Kersley
- Odds: $101
Broke through to win her maiden two back at Sale but was last in a small field at Flemington back to 2000m. Facing a much stiffer challenge here.
15. Velvet Lady (18)
- Record: 8-2:2:2
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: John Ramsey
- Jockey: Grant Buckley
- Odds: $81.00
Steps out in search of her hat-trick following back-to-back wins at Beaudesert and Scone. Gapped her rivals by three lengths over 2200m last time out but was no match on heavy going during her maiden prep.
16. Mauricently (1)
- Record: 6-1:2:1
- Track: 1:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Kris Lees
- Jockey: Craig Williams
- Odds: $61.00
Has been around the mark this time in work and was far from disgraced last week in the Adrian Knox. Failed to finish off after stalking the pace but did show plenty through the line. Should be plenty fit now and has the in-form Craig Williams in the saddle.
17. Chance Reward (16)
- Record: 5-1:1:2
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Nell Foley
- Jockey: Ms Winona Costin
- Odds: $201
Won her maiden well two weeks ago in Canberra but is facing a huge rise in class here. Finished 10th of 13 on heavy going in the Kembla Grange Classic.
18. Youthfull (8)
- Record: 8-0:1:2
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Brad Widdup
- Jockey: Brock Ryan
- Odds: $201
Eight start maiden who hasn’t looked likely in her last two starts.
