Australia Day Cup 2014 day Tips – Randwick racecourse

Randwick is where Sydney racing will take place again this Saturday, with the headline event being the $100,000 Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m). Brigantin and Travolta will fight out favourtism.

Race One: Tab iPhone App Plate 1000m Form Guide

Back Me: Rubick here. Bred in the purple by Encosta De Lago out of Sliding Cube, a former star mare. Has been well backed for the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper and bolted in his lone barrier trial at Rosehill a couple of weeks back. Should be winning if the wraps are correct.
Big Danger: If there is going to be a boilover, it will come from Create for Clarry Conners and James McDonald, another who is beautifully bred by Shamardal and another former good mare in Appear. Bolted in a Warwick Farm barrier trial by six lengths in slick time.
Roughie: Pink Perfection has the race experience on the board, including a game win at Warwick Farm last start. She is a handy filly herself, but bumps into a couple of cracking types. Still should run well.

Race Two: Australian Turf Club Handicap (75) 1300m Form Guide

Back Me: Define for me. Showed during the Winter she is one to follow with two impressive runs, resulting in a second and win respectively. Resumed on the Kensington track a couple of weeks back and worked home strongly late for fourth to Shamalia, an up and comer itself. Would have liked to see her rise in distance, but her class should just about get her home here.
Big Danger: I Can Rock is resuming here off the back of a handy trial win at Warwick Farm a couple of weeks back, sitting midfield before taking the lead late under riding. Last prep he beat subsequent multiple city winner You’ll Never on debut, then two starts later ran a close third to the Oaks winner, Kirramosa. That form looks very good for a race like this.
Roughie: Brettan took forever to wind up on debut, but he eventually got there in the last couple of strides. I think he’ll be better suited over a mile, but he has raw talent and the stable are having a good run at the moment.

Race Three: Studley R/E Advisors Handicap (80) 1800m Form Guide

Back Me: Tamariz on top. Outstanding run in defeat first up when doing a stack of work on the pace, then got a soft time in front and toyed with them. Was going to be favourite for the Stayers Cup at the Gold Coast, but given he was an emergency, he didn’t get a run, so he trialled last week and was quite sharp when second to his stablemate Our Desert Warrior. Only has to hold is form to win here.
Big Danger: Hollywood Bound was having his first start for Chris Waller a couple of weeks back at Warwick Farm over the mile when closing in strongly late when second to Divertire. Gets the weight pull in his favour now, fitter, drawn well and up in trip. Hard to beat.
Roughie: Mr Scary probably got bogged down by the weight last time out when fifth to Celtic Prince over the 2400m at Warwick Farm. I think coming back to 1800m will suit him, as will the inside barrier and the fact that Clipperton is back on board.

Race Four: Inglis Bonus Handicap (75) 1600m Form Guide

Back Me: Going to give Vilanova one more chance here. Both runs since being gelded have been at Rosehill over unsuitable distances, yet has hit the line well in each. From a betting point of view, he is a nightmare, but for mine, he looks the value in the race.
Big Danger: Agadir looks a future stakes winner. He has been so impressive at his two runs back from a break, blitzed them first up at Kembla then was the subject of a decent betting plunge at Warwick Farm, and after doing work sitting wide with no cover, he kicked hard in the straight and drew away late. Creeping up in the weights, but gee he looks promising.
Roughie: Saralago had little luck in her opening two runs this prep, then got some luck and wound up hard late when second to Pheidon at Rosehill (Vilanova third). Meets both horses either equal or better off at the weights, and has upside.

Race Five: January Handicap 1600m Form Guide

Back Me: Best bet on the card for me in Myamira despite an alarming betting drift. She has been excellent at her past three runs, resulting in a win at Warwick Farm, a second to Acapella here and a win in the Belle Of The Turf at Gosford. Once again, Robert Thompson comes to town for the ride, and he doesn’t come here for a sight seeing adventure. Really keen on her chances against this bunch.
Big Danger: Monton and Said Com fought out the milk drinkers handicap a couple of weeks back at Warwick Farm with Monton getting the nod in a close finish. I think Said Com is better suited here at the Randwick mile compared to Monton, who generally saves his best for Warwick Farm. Said Com is a non winner, but so are a majority of these apart from the top tip.
Roughie: Queen’s Elect worked home quite nicely on the worst part of the Gold Coast track in the Magic Millions Cup behind Velrosso. She has plenty of upside in this preparation and gets out to an ideal distance.

Race Six: Australia Day Cup 2400m Form Guide

Back Me: Brigantin for me here. Has had two runs now under Waller, both of which have been very good. Worked home well when fifth to a Doncaster horse in Messene, then just missed and a bit unlucky as well when second to Midsummer Sun in the Gosford Cup. He has upside, pet distance, small field, bigger track…perfect.
Big Danger: Travolta will roll along at a genuine tempo, and look to set up a decent break mid race. He does fight on hard, but just can’t quite find the line late, so Nash getting on board now looks ideal for this horse and his winning chances.
Roughie: Midsummer Sun was given a peach ride by Schofield to win the Gosford Cup, settling well back before pinching runs on the turn and holding off Brigantin. Meets that horse worse off at the weights, but draws to get a cheap run and is in winning form.

Race Seven: Tab.com.au Handicap (80) 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: D-Day now for Recoinage. Three very good runs back from a break, and has steadily gotten better at each outing. Just failed to get Caprossa at Warwick Farm, but now gets back to a bigger track and should get a more genuine tempo. Very hard to beat.
Big Danger: Champagne Cath was hit and miss last time in, letting punters down badly before winning and then being tipped out for a break. Trialled twice, and hasn’t been asked to do much in each. On her best form, she goes very close to winning.
Roughie: Nothing wrong with the win of Caprossa at Warwick Farm, fending off all of her challengers up the straight to hold on gamely. Meets some of these better off at the weights also, so a bit surprised to see $10 on offer for her. Also keep an eye on Saturn Rock, a former kiwi filly who was with Robert Smerdon but is now with Grahame Begg. She has trialled quite nicely.

Race Eight: Royal Randwick Handicap (80) 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: Dream Choice for me in the last. Toyed with them despite doing a stack of work at Scone, then was one of the eye catchers of the entire meeting when making up plenty of ground late on a leaders track when second to Kencella at Rosehill. Only has to bring that form here to go very close.
Big Danger: Shelford was game in defeat when fourth in the Takeover Target at Gosford behind Emblems. After the claim, he gets in so well at the weights, so he is a serious threat.
Roughie: If they go hard in front, look for Sir Berus to blouse them late. He did that last start at Warwick Farm when cutting the corner and finding gaps in the straight to record a win. A fast Randwick 1200m will suit this horses racing style perfectly.
