Day One features four separate Group 1 events, starting with the Group 1 Sires Produce (Race 6) over 1400m where form out of the Golden Slipper arguably holds the key.

With no less than half the field progressing on from that race, it’s a telling statistic that five of the past 10 Sires winners have finished in the top four of the 1200m dash.

She Will Reign has gone to the paddock but the next three runners across the line are engaged here with Michael Freedman’s Frolic expected to take plenty of beating.

Coming from second last near the turn, this filly made up plenty of ground along the rails in the Slipper and while she couldn’t haul in the winner, she was travelling as well as anything at the finish, which suggests the extra furlong shouldn’t pose much of a problem.

The wide draw here is of little concern as she’ll get back anyway and we’re expecting her to finish over the top of them and hand her trainer a nice parting gift ahead of an impending switch to Hong Kong.

David Hayes’ Tulip has made a promising start to her racing career and captured third place in the Slipper on protest having previously won the Magic Night Stakes at her first Sydney start.

She represents the worst way in our book at the time of writing but although she’s drawn to find a nice spot out of gate two, we feel that she’s been up for a while now and we might have seen the best of her already at her maiden preparation.

With most of the leading two-year-old races falling into the hands of the girls this season, Gerald Ryan’s Menari will try to land a blow for the colts after a commendable run in the Slipper.

However, from out in gate 11 he may have to cover more ground than he did in the Slipper and at around the 7/1 mark, we think that other horses represent better value in the race.

Peter Snowden has a fantastic recent record in this event having trained no less than four of the past six winners and he’ll be represented by Gunnison and Invader.

This pair have had nearly a month between runs since their quinella in the Todman Stakes in a tight finish with Invader taking plenty of ground off the stablemate at the finish.

Of the others, we’ve been forced to slash the quote of Kiwi colt Summer Passage after his win in the Sistema Stakes and admit to being uncertain as to how he’ll measure up against some of the better local juvenile horses.

While Victorian pair Aspect and Sirrconi are proven at the 1400m having run one-two in the VRC Sires on Newmarket Day.
