Horse Racing News: ATC issues Mark Latham with suspended penalty

Former Labor Party leader Mark Latham has received a 12-month good behaviour bond from the Australian Turf Club (ATC) following an investigation into remarks he directed at a senior club official earlier this month.

The comments were made by Latham at a recent Rosehill race meeting, prompting the ATC Board to initiate an independent review of the incident.

On Thursday, the ATC released a formal statement confirming the outcome of the investigation. The club announced that Latham had been handed a 12-month suspended sanction, which is subject to compliance with specific conditions.

As part of the ruling, Latham must adhere to the ATC Board Members’ Code Of Conduct in all interactions with staff, Board members, and fellow ATC members to retain his membership rights.

The conditions also prohibit him from making public or social media statements that could “disparage ATC operations pertaining to staff.”

In place of public commentary, the ATC has offered Latham direct access to a customer service channel where he can provide feedback in a constructive manner.

Latham has reportedly accepted the terms set by the ATC. If he breaches any of the conditions, the club has reserved the right to impose a full 12-month suspension immediately and without further notice.

The former ALP leader has been an outspoken opponent of the proposed sale of Rosehill racecourse, which is scheduled for a member vote on May 27.

The voting date has been rescheduled twice to allow the club more time to finalise its proposal and offer additional detail and transparency to its members.
