Apprentice Deanne Panya collects city treble

Three front-running rides have given Deanne Panya her most successful day on a race course.

The apprentice jockey scored a winning treble at Randwick on Saturday, guiding home Encostanati, Snappy One and Lie Direct.

Panya now has 10 city winners under her belt and is halfway to outriding her 3kg claim.

While she admits the apprentice premiership is in the back of her mind, the 23-year-old is not setting any goals for the new season.

“I pretty much just want to win whatever I can and do the best I can,” Panya said.

“If I set myself goals and don’t achieve them obviously I’ll get disappointed.”

Snappy One’s victory gave country trainer Jeremy Sylvester his third win in a Highway race.

Panya found the lead after 200m with Snappy One but once the horse found the front, he stayed there.

Panya gave Lie Direct another front-running ride to stride away to a nine-length victory in the 2400m race.

“Today, because it’s so heavy it makes it hard for the horses behind to catch up and make ground,” Panya said.

After Encostanati’s win in the 1200m benchmark 78 handicap, trainer Bjorn Baker said he had been a long-time fan of Panya’s riding ability.
