Angel to Capitalise on handicap chance in Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2025

After weighing up his options, Chris Waller looks set to aim Angel Capital at Saturday’s $1 million Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield rather than the Manikato Stakes (1200m) a week later at Moonee Valley.

The Sir Rupert Clarke will be contested over 1400 metres and headlines Caulfield’s program alongside the $1 million Underwood Stakes (1800m). Waller said the handicap conditions were simply too tempting to pass up.

“We’d love to go the Manikato, but he’ll get in well at the weights in the Sir Rupert Clarke and 1400 will be no problem,” Waller explained. “I’d hate to miss the Sir Rupert Clarke and he draw the outside barrier in the Manikato. If we’re good enough to win a Manikato, I’m sure he’ll win multiple Group 1 races, so I think we’ll just try the Sir Rupert Clarke.”

Angel Capital resumed with a devastating win in the Listed Chautauqua Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley earlier this month, his first outing for Waller after being purchased by Yulong and transferred from former trainer Clinton McDonald. The four-year-old son of Harry Angel has now won five of his eight career starts.

“We’ve had to be patient with him, just with wet tracks and things like that, but he’s a really nice horse,” Waller said.

Angel Capital is among 22 nominations for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, which also features Another Wil and progressive runner Sepals. The Underwood Stakes, meanwhile, has attracted 26 entries including defending champion Buckaroo, Melbourne Cup aspirant Sir Delius and last year’s Cup winner Knight’s Choice.
