Horse Racing News: Andrew Adkins making hay while winter sun shines

Former champion apprentice Andrew Adkins is enjoying a purple patch in Sydney and is eager to build on that form as the season enters its final stretch.

Adkins landed his second Saturday metropolitan double this month at Rosehill, guiding Motoscafo to victory in the Midway Handicap (1200m) for John Thompson and then saluting aboard Freight Train in the TAB Handicap (2000m) for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.

Just two weeks prior, he claimed another pair of wins at the same venue, including success in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) on Touristic and another win on King’s Secret in a benchmark race.

With many of Sydney’s senior jockeys committed to the Brisbane winter carnival, Adkins has seized the increased opportunities in town and is committed to maintaining his momentum.

“Any winners are good winners but obviously in town, especially on a Saturday, is much better,” Adkins said.

“I’m getting good support which I am thankful for and I’ve just got to try to execute off the back of that.

“Things are good. I’ve had a bit of success lately and that certainly helps you gain a bit of confidence.”

A former Sydney champion apprentice in 2016-17, Adkins has mostly plied his trade on the provincial scene in recent years. Saturday’s double lifted his metro tally for the season to nine wins, with 58 victories overall in NSW.

He previously partnered Motoscafo to victory at Newcastle and used that knowledge to great effect on Saturday.

“She had a really good turn of foot late at Newcastle that day and I wanted to ride her similarly, get to the outside and get her to rocket home,” he said.

“She is always strong late if afforded the right opportunities.

“I rode her at on the ‘Kenso’ (Kensington track) a couple back and tried to ride her forward and she didn’t like that.”

Motoscafo has now won three of her 10 starts and continues to uphold a strong family tradition, being a half-sister to dual stakes performers Tristate and Blazing Miss.
