Horse Racing News: Amusing has last laugh at Rosehill races

With the curtain soon closing on Godolphin’s private training operation, assistant trainer Darren Beadman is soaking up every moment, including a satisfying victory by the promising filly Amusing at Rosehill on Saturday.

Godolphin’s renowned model will shift from a private stable to a public structure at the start of the new season, dispersing their expansive racing team across various trainers nationwide.

Head trainer James Cummings has already confirmed his departure to take up a prestigious role in Hong Kong beginning with the 2026-27 racing season. Meanwhile, Beadman has yet to outline his future plans beyond Godolphin’s current setup.

Despite the looming transition, Beadman was firmly focused on the task at hand and said Amusing’s win in the Stuart Macdermid Handicap (1500m) was a welcome morale boost for the team.

“Great for the team. The time is coming to a close and it will put a spring in everybody’s step,” Beadman said.

Amusing, who was having just her sixth career start, had previously run into strong opposition such as Group 3 winner Verona Rose and had shown potential in her earlier performances this preparation, despite not placing.

“Her two runs in this time have been tremendous and she has been a little bit unlucky on both occasions. She probably should have finished a lot closer,” Beadman said.

“Alysha (Collett) gave her a beautiful ride, just balanced her up lovely and let her chime into the run.

“She was a little bit flat-footed at the top of the straight but she is by an English Derby winner (Masar) and there is a lot of upside to her and a lot of ceiling left.”

Amusing, sent out at $8.50, surged late to narrowly edge out Sister Daae, the $4.40 betting favourite, by a short head. Mr Verse finished another half-head away in third.

It was a solid day overall for Godolphin with stablemates Corniche and Kerguelen also placing in their respective events on the Rosehill card.

Elsewhere on the program, apprentice jockey Anna Roper was fortunate to escape injury after a fall from her mount Pony Soprano in the early stages of the Highway Handicap (1100m). Roper was dislodged when the horse clipped heels but was able to walk to the ambulance and later participated in a stewards’ inquiry. She was subsequently stood down from her remaining rides as a precaution.

Amusing’s win was a timely reminder of Godolphin’s class as their private chapter nears its end, and punters who backed her were rewarded with a healthy price.
