News:

The chance to aim at a late-season stakes win with two-year-old Backstab is behind trainer Gerald Ryan’s decision to start the colt at Warwick Farm.

Ryan has also entered Backstab for the two-year-old race at Randwick on Saturday and although Wednesday’s race is worth half as much, it will give the colt more time before his next assignment.

“The Warwick Farm race fits in better because we want to take him to a Listed race at the Gold Coast on Tatt’s Tiara day,” Ryan said.

“It gives him more time to get over it and it’s also over 1200 metres while Randwick is only 1100.”

The $100,000 Listed Tattersall’s Stakes (1400m) on June 20 is the aim for Backstab.

The trainer will run Bubbleberry and Stilletoed Vixen in the Cellarbrations Handicap (1200m) at the Warwick Farm meeting.

“They are two fillies in their right class,” he said.

“And there aren’t many races just for two-year-old fillies so this suits.”

Stilettoed Vixen was a long-priced winner on debut at Wyong in April before coming up with a midfield finish in the Listed Woodlands Stakes at the Scone feature meeting.

Bubbleberry got a long way back from a wide barrier at her first start at Newcastle and ran home well for third.

From a better draw she took up a more forward position at Gosford on May 14 and lived up to her favouritism with a strong win.

She has fared best of the stablemates with barrier two at Warwick Farm with Stilettoed Vixen to jump from the outside gate.

Ryan will be represented in the juvenile race at Randwick on Saturday by Spill The Beans, a two-length winner over expensive colt Emaratee at Gosford last month.

“He is a very good colt,” Ryan said.

“Not many two-year-olds can go to the races off one barrier trial and win.

“And he beat older horses at Gosford so coming back to his own age will suit.”

Emaratee, a $4 million yearling, again finished second in a three-year-old maiden at Goulburn on Monday.
