Just Too Fly finally broke through for a deserved win, securing his maiden victory in style at Ascot on Saturday in the season’s final feature for two-year-olds.
After near-misses in the Perth Stakes (1100m) and the Karrakatta Plate (1200m), the colt turned the tables in the Group 3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m), digging deep to edge out his rivals under Brad Parnham.
Parnham guided the Luke Fernie-trained runner into a forward position, dueling with Snitzalatte at the 200m before pulling clear to score narrowly over Fila Mia and Statewide.
Managing owner Kim Doak was thrilled with the breakthrough win after watching the $210,000 yearling buy accumulate nearly $250,000 in earnings.
“This is one that Luke just liked straight away,” Doak said on Tabradio.
“I’ve learnt in the past few years that when he looks at the horses and I look at Luke and he gets excited, I take note.”
The victory marked the latest milestone in Doak and Fernie’s fruitful partnership, which has already delivered stakes success with Ripcord and Wild Belle.
Doak recalled initial doubts about affording the colt due to his pedigree, being by Justify.
“I thought chestnut, Justify horse, well bred, that’s going to be outside of our price range,” he said.
“We couldn’t stop laughing, like little kids giggling on how lucky we’d been.”
For Parnham, it was a continuation of a dominant juvenile campaign, with the win representing his third Sires title after Bustling in 2024 and Snowdome in 2022.
Doak believes Just Too Fly will target Guineas races as a three-year-old.
