News:

Gary Portelli will ignore the tactical subtleties often involved in weight-for-age racing in issuing simple riding instructions on Rebel Dane in the All Aged Stakes.

Accepting Rebel Dane is a one-dimensional racehorse, Portelli will tell Blake Shinn to ride the entire for luck in the Group One race at Randwick on Saturday.

“Unfortunately it looks like he has to be given a cold ride … so he’ll be strong late,” Portelli said.

Portelli admits he was a deflated trainer when Rebel Dane resumed and missed a place in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley last month.

“I was disappointed with the result. I thought he would win that race,” he said.

But Portelli has taken on board the advice of jockey Craig Williams who told connections there was an obvious reason for the lack of punch in the horse’s finish.

“The position he was in you would think that was the perfect position for most horses,” Portelli said.

“But for him I just think he was a little bit too close.

“If you get him racing early he wants to get on with it too much and he doesn’t finish the race off.”

Rebel Dane returns to Sydney racing for the first time since Shinn had his only ride on the sprinter when they finished third in the Missile Stakes last August.

He started favourite in last year’s All Aged but ran below his best after finishing second on a bog track to Lankan Rupee in the TJ Smith Stakes.

That’s a scenario Portelli would like repeated with last week’s TJ Smith winner Chautauqua and third placegetter Terravista who are among 18 All Aged nominations.

“Sometimes those horses coming off a heavy track back onto a good track can have a little bit of speed taken out of them,” Portelli said.

“That’s my hope anyway. You got to have something otherwise you’re defeated before you start.”

Ten of the All Aged entries are Group One winners, headed by the Peter Moody-trained Dissident which is in his last racing campaign before retiring to stud.

Dissident hasn’t raced since a shock defeat in the Futurity Stakes in February but a CF Orr Stakes win at his previous start was his fourth at Group One level.

Three-year-olds nominated are Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting To Win, last month’s Australian Guineas winner Wandjina and Golden Rose placegetter Scissor Kick.
