News:

It’s not often trainers hope their runners come up against strong opposition but John Sadler is keen to put promising filly Bengal Cat to the test in the Taj Rossi Series Final.

The two-year-old impressed when she won at Flemington last start in a lead-up race to Saturday’s Listed series final at the same track over 1600m.

After angling off heels halfway down the straight, Bengal Cat chased down favourite El Greco to get up on the line.

The Peter Moody-trained El Greco is among 17 nominations for Saturday’s Listed race.

After Bengal Cat’s Flemington win Sadler revealed Oaks ambitions for the filly in the spring and is hoping Saturday will give him even more of a guide.

“I thought she was pretty good last start and I’m hopeful of her maybe turning into something,” Sadler said.

“Whether she is going to or not, we might get a good chance to see that on Saturday because it’s going to be a nice little race.

“I see 17 nominations and about six chances, I reckon.

“I was hoping for a good field, a really strong field, so that we can get a bit of a guide as to whether we’re kidding ourselves about the spring or not.”

Sadler is set to be well-represented on Saturday’s program which features the finals to nine different race series including the Winter Championship Final and the All Victorian Sprint Series Final.

Sadler has booked premiership contender Craig Williams for Bengal Cat as well as last-start Flemington winner Lonrockstar in the All Victorian Sprint Series Final and Prizum in the Banjo Paterson Series Final.

Glen Boss has the ride on Henwood in the Winter Championship Final.

“I’ve got some horses that are in form, just like a lot of horses that are going there on Saturday,” Sadler said.

“It’s a great days racing for the middle of winter.”
