Lord Shiva has quickly cemented himself as a standout in Mitchell Pateman’s stable following a dominant win at Belmont on Wednesday.
The Playing God gelding made light work of his opposition in the Fimiston Handicap (1000m), coasting to victory by 4¾ lengths under a motionless Holly Watson. Sent out a $1.70 betting sites favourite, he controlled the race from the front and never looked in danger.
Leading all the way, Lord Shiva defeated Strictly Cash and Hezangelic, extending his unbeaten record since joining Pateman’s Ascot operation from the Adam Durrant stable.
“I think he’s the real deal,” Pateman said. “Everything he does is strikingly similar to Almighty Class. He’s got a lovely action and I really like him.”
Pateman noted that the gelding’s physiological data matched that of former stable star Almighty Class, adding confidence to his belief that Lord Shiva has a bright future.
“There’s not a lot around like him, and we won’t be coming back for the mid-weeks,” he said.
Pateman also praised Holly Watson for her role in helping the gelding learn to settle and manage his energy in training. She finally got her chance to ride him on race day and delivered a commanding win.
“We knew he had it there, and he just had to show it at the races,” Watson said. “He’s a really nice horse and hopefully he has bigger and better things in store.”
Lord Shiva shares bloodlines with Almighty Class, another Playing God progeny, who ran a narrow second in the Belgravia Stakes (1200m) after winning the Max Simmond Stakes (1000m).
Lord Shiva’s next target will likely be a Saturday metropolitan race, where punters can follow his progress and view the latest markets at top betting sites.
