Victorian galloper Smokin’ Joey has denied Platelet a second Goodwood win with a barnstorming finish to claim Adelaide’s most important sprint.
Coming down the outside of the Morphettville track for jockey Ben Melham, Smokin’ Joey ($41) overhauled last year’s winner to give young trainer Wez Hunter his first Group One success.
It was also a welcome return for Melham at just his third ride back from several months off recovering from double hip surgery.
Platelet ($7.50), who Melham rode to win the race a year ago, held out another outsider, the $26 chance Riziz to decide the placings.
Hunter is the third trainer for Smokin’ Joey after the six-year-old had previously raced for Anthony Freedman and Mick Price.
The gelding went within a half neck of winning a Group One in the spring when he finished second to Boban in the $1 million Emirates Stakes.
Platelet looked set for successive Goodwood victories when she burst to the lead at the 200m but she had no answer to the winner’s finish.
Riziz was also being hailed a likely winner when he followed Miracles Of Life through inside runners at the turn.
The $320,000 winner’s purse took Smokin’ Joey’s career earnings past $1 million.
