In the news:

Solemn’s winning sequence came to an inglorious halt in the Summer Cup but jockey Kerrin McEvoy is adamant the promising stayer can bounce back at Gosford on Friday.

Regarded highly enough by Darley trainer Peter Snowden to contest the three-year-old triple crown last autumn, Solemn appeared poised to deliver on his promise following back-to-back wins at Randwick.

But last start he failed to handle the shifty track in the Group Three Summer Cup and finished last of the 12 runners, beaten 17 lengths.

McEvoy has encouraged punters to forgive the run and says Solemn can produce a form turnaround in the Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) provided he gets firm footing.

“We’re confident that’s all it was and he can bounce back to form on a dry surface,” McEvoy said.

“The soft patch from the 1000 metres to the 400 just caused him to lose confidence in the ground, which he has done in the past.”

Solemn is one of nine runners in the $125,000 feature which also boasts Summer Cup winner I’m Imposing and third placegetter Destiny’s Kiss.

It is one of three stakes races on the twilight program and McEvoy will also be aboard strong chances in the other two.

He will partner the in-form Emblems for Snowden in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) and La Pieta, one of three runners for Darley in the Group Three Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) for fillies and mares.

Emblems has earned a shot at stakes grade after impressively winning his past two starts in Saturday company with McEvoy in the saddle.

“He’s a horse on the improve and I’ll be very surprised if he’s not up to black-type level at some stage in his career,” McEvoy said.

He is also keen on the chances of La Pieta, who he elected to ride over stablemates Pleiades and Babel, runner-up in the corresponding race last year.
