Sysmo has yet to win beyond 1600 metres but his trainer Tony McEvoy is convinced that’s when he will be seen at his best.
On that basis, McEvoy expects a big showing in Thursday’s Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick from the five-year-old who will be ridden by Robert Thompson.
Sysmo won the Seymour Cup on October 20 but suffered a foot abscess after his next start on November 9 when he ran third at Flemington.
It needed to be treated, forcing Sysmo to miss a scheduled start and prompting McEvoy to change plans and run him in the Group Two Villiers Stakes in which he finished eighth, 3-1/4 lengths from the winner Ninth Legion.
“He’s come through the Villiers really well. The mile is not ideal for him and I’m looking forward to getting him back to 2000 metres,” McEvoy said.
“I think that allows him to be seen at his best.”
If he goes as well as McEvoy believes he can, The Hobart Cup (2400m) on February 9 could be an option for Sysmo with the trainer also eyeing the race for recent Werribee Cup winner Pelicano.
Sysmo is one of several European imports in McEvoy’s care and came to him with one win from three starts in France.
“We are sourcing horses from Europe but buying them privately,” McEvoy said.
“They are now too expensive at sales like Tattersalls.”
The Summer Cup will have a maximum of 12 runners following the withdrawal on Monday of Brisbane mare Poste Restante who is entered for a 2200-metre race at Doomben on Saturday.
Chris Waller has accepted with I’m Imposing and Hoylonny, a last-start third to his stablemate Permit in the Christmas Cup.
“I don’t think Hoylonny really got the 2400 metres and he will be better suited here,” Waller said.
Before the Christmas Cup, Hoylonny finished second to Travolta in the ATC Cup, giving 1kg to the Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding.
The weights fall in Hoylonny’s favour this time around with Travolta to carry 59kg topweight and Hoylonny 58kg.
