2013 Flight Stakes results: Guelph too good

Darley’s Guelph confirmed her rating as one of Australia’s best three-year-old fillies at Randwick on Saturday.

Collecting the third Group One victory of her career, Guelph justified her odds-on tag to win the Flight Stakes.

But she had to do it the hard way, racing three-wide without cover in the six-horse field.

Her win proved she has returned bigger and stronger than ever after winning the Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes during the Sydney autumn carnival.

Sprinting best when she needed to, Guelph, the $1.30 favourite, held a clear margin over the Victorian filly Sensibility ($61) with Bound For Earth ($14) taking third.

In spite of the race not unfolding to his liking, trainer Peter Snowden said he was never worried about the result.

“To me she had an exhibition gallop, that’s all,” Snowden said.

“If you can jump, relax and have got a turn of foot, that will take you a long way and she possesses all three (assets).”

Guelph is now an overwhelming favourite to post another Group One victory in the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on October 16.
