2013 Caulfield Cup field, past results and history

The Caulfield Cup is one of the biggest thoroughbred races in Australia, introduced in 1879 and run ever since at Caulfield Racecourse. This amazing event for three year olds and up is worth $2.65 million in prize money, making it one of the richest events in the nation. Run under Open Handicap conditions over a distance of 2400 metres, the Caulfield Cup has a long and distinguished history and has been won by many of Australia’s greatest horses.

Over its long history, eleven horses have managed to win the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double: Poseidon in 1906, The Trump in 1937, Rivette in 1939, Rising Fast in 1954, Even Stevens in 1962, Galilee in 1966, Gurner’s Lane in 1982, Let’s Elope in 1991, Doriemus in 1995, Might and Power in 1997, and Ethereal in 2001. Recent winners of this event include Dunaden in 2012, Southern Speed in 2011, Descarado in 2010, and Viewed in 2009.

Some horses have managed to win the Caulfield Cup on more than one occasion, with Poseidon being the first to take out back to back victories in 1906 and 1907. Uncle Sam also won the Cup twice in 1912 and 1914, with Whittier winning in both 1922 and 1925. Rising Fast won the Caulfield Cup in 1945 and 1955, and was the last horse to manage this amazing feat.

In 1881 there were two Caulfield Cups held after the race was moved from Autumn to Spring, with dual events also hosted the next year due to an extremely large number of entries. The Caulfield Cup was not held at Caulfield Racecourse during the Second World War, and was moved instead to Flemington Racecourse for the 1941, 1942 and 1943 seasons.

1885 was a bad year for the Caulfield Cup, with 16 of the 44 horses competing falling as they turned onto the straight. This led to the death of jockey Donald Nicolson and is one of the reasons why the Caulfield Cup field is restricted to 18 runners today. The Caulfield Cup has been open to international competition since 1998, with British horse Taufan’s Melody winning the very same year and All The Good a decade later in 2008.

Bart Cummings is the most successful trainer in the Caulfield Cup, winning on seven occasions with Galilee, Big Philou, Leilani, Ming Dynasty (twice), Let’s Elope and Viewed. In one amazing statistic, jockey Scobie Breasley won the Caulfield Cup on four consecutive occasions from 1942 to 1945, including a division of the 1943 races which was run in two divisions.
