2012 Coolmore Classic day raceday review

Ladies Day at Rosehill on Saturday certainly lived up to that with jockey Kathy O’Hara taking the Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) with Ofcourseican. However, the race had a touch of controversy with Michelle Payne, rider of fourth placegetter Yosei, fired in a protest against the winner but it was quickly dismissed.

In the Ranvet Stakes (2000m), Manighar continued his sparkling form with a gritty win over comeback galloper Rangirangdoo. Both horses sat wide yet showed their class on the line. Both gallopers will be hard to beat in wherever they race.

Glamour girl More Joyous resumed with an outstanding performance to take out her second successive Canterbury Stakes (1300m) from Metal Bender, who was arguably the run of the day. Both of them will be in for fruitful campaigns if they maintain this sort of form.

The Golden Slipper picture was made much clearer with Pierro and Samaready scoring top wins in the Todman Stakes (1200m) and the Reisling Stakes (1200m) respectively. I think those two are pair to beat in the $3.5 Million classic.

Race One: Spotless Todman Stakes 1200m

FORGIVE:
They had their chance.

FORGET:
Bit disappointed by Amorino and his effort. He did stop very quickly and for me, he isn’t a Golden Slipper contender now.

FOLLOW:
The margin wasn’t pretty for punters, but Pierro is all class. It is rare to see juveniles been headed and then fight back to win. The horse to beat in the Golden Slipper I think.

Race Two: The Apn Spirit Of Outdoor Handicap 1200m

FORGIVE:
Choice Words was near the inside, which was not the place to be. She still ran well, but would have run a place if she was out wider.

FORGET:
Not really sure here. Perhaps Liechtenstein, because she was most disappointing.

FOLLOW:
Gee wasn’t Pampelone very impressive? Travelled big time in the run and showed a dazzling turn of speed in the straight.

Race Three: Jacobs Creek Reisling Stakes 1200m

FORGIVE:
None, because they bumped in to a little beauty in Samaready.

FORGET:
Snitzerland had the right run, but she wasn’t flash over the concluding stages. Not a Golden Slipper contender for me on what she showed here.

FOLLOW:
Hussousa was much better ridden off the pace. She looks like a Sires-Champagne type, but if they go hard in the Slipper, which they normally do, look out for her.

Race Four: McGrath Sky High Stakes 1900m

FORGIVE:
Vintedge was caught deep all the way and really had no hope. Forgive and forget she went around.

FORGET:
Put the line through Brayroan. He had the run of the race, and really should have been right in the finish, but wasn’t. He won’t be getting my money anytime soon.

FOLLOW:
Gee Single is going to be a good horse once he develops a fully functional brain. Does plenty yet still wins.

Race Five: Myer Canterbury Stakes 1300m

FORGIVE:
Somepin Anypin isn’t suited at WFA and he set an electric tempo from a wide barrier. He is better than that, so don’t sack him.

FORGET:
Wouldn’t forget any of them…yet.

FOLLOW:
She was always going to improve from this run, but More Joyous is all class. She deserves to win a good race eg Doncaster Mile. If she strikes a firm surface, it could happen.

Race Six: Ranvet Stakes 2000m

FORGIVE:
Scarlett Lady got badly hampered near the turn and lost all momentum. Give her another chance.

FORGET:
Illo had promised a lot after a slashing start to the Autumn. However, his last two starts have been ordinary.

FOLLOW:
Rangirangdoo is back to his best. Took a very good horse in Manighar to nail him. Wherever he goes, ‘Rangi’ will be awfully hard to beat.

Race Seven: Coolmore Classic 1500m

FORGIVE:
Streama was caught wide with no cover. If you watch the replay, you’ll see she actually hit the line well.

FORGET:
Steps In Time was ugly after setting the speed. This isn’t her grade.

FOLLOW:
Yosei is flying at present, but can’t get luck. If she gets luck at any stage in the next start or two, she’ll take a stack of beating.

Race Eight: Spotless Pharlap Stakes 1500m

FORGIVE:
That’s The One was all at sea racing the Sydney way and only going the last furlong. Keep backing up on him.

FORGET:
Benfica might want the breeding barn now. He was very poor today.

FOLLOW:
Gun ride by McDonald on the winner Colorado Claire, Rekindled Alliance was excellent and Wild And Proud will be just about unstoppable when he gets back to Randwick.

Race Nine: Bacardi Maurice McCarten Stakes 1100m

FORGIVE:
Riva De Lago should have won, but had no luck in the straight. He is in for a cracking Autumn/Winter.

FORGET:
Good to hear that Karuta Queen is going for a spell because she has been terrible this time in. Hopefully we see the best of her in the Spring.

FOLLOW:
Title has a knack of winning a race or two each prep. Great horse for connections. Uate was super in his return while Zaratone set a cracking tempo and stuck on well. He’ll be winning soon.
