Woods hits lead at US Open

Tiger Woods has already found his way into the lead early in the second round of the US Open at the Olympic Club.

It’s tight at the top of the leaderboard after overnight leader Michael Thompson came back to the field with early troubles in his second round.

Woods parred his opening two holes of the second round but birdied the third to move to two-under for the tournament, good enough for a one-stroke lead over Jim Furyk and Thompson.

Furyk fired a one-under par 69 in the morning wave to be the clubhouse leader at one-under par while Thompson is three over through four holes on day two and back-pedalling fast.

Australian Alistair Presnell is in a tie for fourth at even par although he is yet to start round two.

John Senden shot a 73 to move to five-over par, which should be good enough for weekend play while Jason Day (71) sits one shot back hoping for carnage in the afternoon wave.

Geoff Ogilvy’s 74 moved him to 10 over par and a long shot to play more golf while Aaron Baddeley (79) can pack his bags after finishing at 14 over par.

Presnell is joined by Adam Scott (+6), Anthony Summers (+6), Rod Pampling (+4) and Brendan Jones (+6) in the afternoon wave.
