Woods, Bregman lead at Ladies Masters

American Cheyenne Woods has showed it’s not just her uncle who can tame a golf course as she surged into the lead at the Australian Ladies Masters.

The 23-year-old niece of superstar Tiger Woods shot a six-under-par 67 at Royal Pines to move to 10-under overall and take the clubhouse lead midway through the second round on Friday.

Woods’ round boasted five birdies and a bogey as well as a marvellous eagle from the fairway on the par-4 1st which put her into a lead she didn’t relinquish.

After bogeying the par-5 18th, Woods hit a 7-iron from 150 yards directly into the hole in what was clearly her highlight of the round.

“Going into the turn I still felt good with where I was standing and the eagle was just a bonus,” she said.

“I knew I hit it really well. I know it was the right club, good distance. I saw it land and then looked away and they said ‘it went in, it went in’. Definitely exciting.”

English veteran Trish Johnson, 48, shot the round of the morning as she made eight birdies and one bogey in a seven-under 66 to move into a share of second with South Africa’s Stacy Lee Bergman at nine-under.

“I don’t think I hit a poor putt in 18 holes,” Johnson said after her round.

Johnson’s compatriot, 17-year-old Charley Hull, moved into fifth place with a seven-under 66 while amateur Minjee Lee (70) is the highest ranked Australian at six-under along with overnight leaders Katie Burnett and Jessica Korda.

Defending champion Karrie Webb will take to the course this afternoon as she aims to get back into contention following a disappointing first round one-over 74.
