Webb sits third in LPGA Phoenix event

Australian veteran Karrie Webb is tied for third following the opening round of the LPGA Founders Cup in Arizona.

Webb, the 2011 champion, fired a six-under-par 66 at the Wildfire Golf Club to trail only South Korean rookie Mirim Lee (64) and American Morgan Pressel (65).

The 39-year-old Webb was tied with world No.1 Park In-Bee, world No.3 Stacy Lewis, Michelle Wie, Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg, American Gerina Piller and South Korean Ji Eun-Hee.

Leader Lee began on the back nine and fired six birdies, then added another at the first to stand seven-under.

But she took her lone bogey at the par-5 second before responding with birdies at the third and seventh holes to grab the lead.

It is only the third LPGA event and first in the United States for Lee, who shared 33rd in January at the Bahamas and 25th at the Women’s Australian Open last month.
