After two days of high wind, the US PGA Tour season is under way – at least for now.
The opening two days of the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua on Maui in Hawaii were postponed because of wind gusts topping 65kph, but play was finally possible on Sunday.
A few dozen fans in the bleachers cheered when the announcer said, “Welcome to the first round of the Tournament of Champions.”
The season opener was already off to a dubious start, and it didn’t help when Rickie Fowler nearly whiffed his 3-wood.
The ball never got more than shoulder-high and barely reached the fairway, leaving him 290 yards away.
Fowler also hit the opening shot on Friday, only for the first round to be scrapped after he played eight holes because gusts that kept balls from stopping on the green.
The goal was to play 18 holes on Sunday, followed by 36 holes Monday.
